This week’s passage reveals the climax of God’s plan of salvation as Jesus willingly endures trial, crucifixion, and burial while remaining fully sovereign and obedient to the Father’s will. At the cross, Jesus completes the work of redemption, declaring, “It is finished,” and opening the way for all who believe to be reconciled to God. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus model courageous devotion by publicly identifying with Christ. This passage calls us to trust Christ’s finished work, live with gratitude instead of guilt, and respond to His sacrificial love with faithful obedience.

 

Put It into Practice: When guilt, shame, or the pressure to “earn” God’s love creeps in this week, pause and remember Jesus’ words: “It is finished.” Thank Him that your acceptance before God rests on His completed work, not your performance.

 

Day 1 John 18:28-40

Reflect: What do you think about Jesus’ response to Pilate’s questions? What matters most to kings of the earth? What is Jesus’ primary focus in His Kingdom? What does the Bible teach us about truth? 

Apply: How has the truth of God transformed the way you live your life? Jesus said that He is the Truth. How does this impact your understanding of truth spoken here? What lies have you uncovered? 

Pray: Father, forgive me for the times I look to worldly power, approval, or convenience rather than seeking Your eternal truth. Help me to listen to the voice of Jesus, who is the Truth.

 

Day 2 John 19:1-16

Reflect: What are your thoughts about Pilate, and what do you learn from his situation? How does Jesus’ statement in v. 11 comfort you when you see injustice or ungodly leadership today?  

Apply: When are you most tempted to compromise your moral convictions or faith due to peer pressure or fear of consequences? Who would people say was your “king” this week and why?

Pray: Jesus, forgive me for the times I compromised my faith to avoid public pressure, or when I put earthly things before You. Give me courage to bow before You and to follow You, no matter the cost.

 

Day 3 John 19:17-27 

Reflect: How does the crowd’s rejection of Jesus as King parallel the ways people reject His lordship today? What do you learn about the Lord based on verses 26 and 27? What is He saying to you now?

Apply: Out of all the groups present at the crucifixion, which group do you find yourself relating to the most right now? What specific area of your life is God calling you to surrender to the “crucified King”?

Pray: Lord, give me the faith to stand close to the cross, unashamed to be associated with You, my crucified King. Teach me to care for the family of God with the same love You displayed on the cross.

 

Day 4 John 19:28-37

Reflect: The Greek word for “It is finished”, tetelestai, translates to “paid in full”. What does it mean to you that Jesus wiped away your spiritual debt? How has reading about His death impacted you? 

Apply: In what ways can you rest in His “finished” work rather than feeling the need to earn salvation or God’s favor? Are you living as someone who has full, unhindered access to His presence?

Pray: Heavenly Father, I thank You that Jesus has paid my debt – in full! Remind me, Jesus, that I do not need to earn Your love; I only need to rest in what You have already done.

 

Day 5 John 19:38-42

Reflect: As you enter this text, consider these questions: What gave the two men courage? What was Nicodemus thinking: that Jesus was a dead teacher or Messiah? Where was everyone else? 

Apply: Are my own gifts and acts of devotion as costly as theirs? Am I willing to risk my own reputation, resources, or comfort for my faith today? Where is Jesus calling me to be brave for Him? 

Pray: God, grant me the courage to step out of the shadows of fear, compromise, or quiet discipleship. Teach me to serve You openly, offering my heart, resources, and devotion to You without hesitation.
