Week 1 The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts May 26-30

Spiritual Gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit and distributed to every believer according  to God’s design and grace for the common good of the body of Christ. The purpose of spiritual gifts is  to glorify God, encourage believers, and build up the body of Christ. Discovering and using our  spiritual gifts is not a light matter. God has entrusted them to us to serve Him and His purposes.

Put It into Practice: To help you discern your gifts, take this free online Gifts Test (it only takes 5-6  minutes), which will show you your Top 5. You’ll find the test here: https://giftstest.com/allgifts. Then, sign up to attend one of the Spiritual Gifts Workshops at 9:30 on Sunday, June 15 or 22, Rm. 224.

Day 1       1 Peter 4:10-11

Reflect: What does this text say about the purpose of our spiritual gifts? Why do you think Peter  chose to emphasize speaking and serving gifts? How does worship connect with using our gifts?

Apply: When have you experienced someone using their spiritual gift in a way that deeply impacted  you? What do you notice in verse 11 about how gifts are to be practiced so that God receives glory?

Pray: God, thank You for the unique gifts You have entrusted to me to make a difference in the lives  of others. May I faithfully steward these gifts to serve others and reflect Your love.

Day 2      Acts 1:6-8

Reflect: Describe the mission of the church based on this text. What does “receive power” from the  Holy Spirit mean? What do you think this passage has to do with spiritual gifts?

Apply: Jesus shifts the conversation from political power to spiritual mission. How does this shift  affect how we view our role as Christians today? How do spiritual gifts allow us to witness or testify?

Pray:   Holy Spirit, guide and empower me to use my spiritual gifts to encourage others and serve with  joy. Make me an effective witness for Your kingdom to draw others to Jesus.

Day 3     Ephesians 2:8-10

Reflect: How does the truth in verse 8 shape the way we view the use of our spiritual gifts? Why is it  important that we discover and use our gifts? Describe the good things or works from verse 10.

Apply: What thoughts came to mind when you read this text? Has God revealed to you the work He  planned for you? Are you stepping into your role? If not, why? If so, what fruit do you see?

Pray:    Jesus, help me to do the good works You have prepared for me with my heart fully surrendered  to You. Strengthen me to wholeheartedly serve with humility, joy, and unwavering faith to bring glory  to Your name.

Day 4      Romans 12:1-5

Reflect: How is using our spiritual gifts like being a living sacrifice? Why is humility important when  using them within the body of Christ? How does verse 5 challenge our view of spiritual gifts?

Apply:  What happens to the church community when some members don’t recognize or use their  spiritual gifts? How does the analogy of a body help you better understand the function of gifts?

Pray:    Father, I offer myself as a living sacrifice to be holy and pleasing to You. Help our church body  use our unique gifts in ways to faithfully build Your kingdom and to glorify You.

 Day 5     1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Reflect: How does this passage speak to the true purpose of spiritual gifts? Do you think Paul is  saying some gifts are more important than others? What point is he making here, and why?

Apply: What does it look like practically to “earnestly desire” spiritual gifts without being selfish or  prideful? How can we make sure our spiritual gifts are used to bless others and not just ourselves?

Pray:   Lord, we eagerly desire the gifts of Your Spirit, to strengthen, encourage, and comfort others.  May our words and actions edify Your Church in ways that reflect Your truth in love to the world.
