The Book of John – Week 19: Courage in a Troubled World | August 10-14

Jesus prepares His disciples for the challenges of following Him, promising they will not face them alone. He sends the Holy Spirit—the Advocate—to strengthen, guide, and empower believers to testify about Christ and live according to God’s truth. Though Jesus warns that His followers will experience trouble, persecution, and hardship, He offers lasting hope: “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” This passage reminds us that our confidence rests not in favorable circumstances but in Christ’s victory. As we rely on the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm and live as courageous witnesses.

Put It into Practice: Identify a situation where you are tempted to compromise, become discouraged, or remain silent. Ask God for courage and take one faithful step forward.

Day 1 John 15:26-16:4

Reflect: What did Jesus mean when He said the Spirit will testify about Him? Have you experienced that? Why is a realistic expectation of suffering or rejection important for maintaining a strong faith?

Apply: How have you testified about Jesus? How has someone’s testimony impacted you? What promises or truths from Scripture have anchored you when you felt overwhelmed or discouraged?

Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from You to bear witness to Jesus. In a world full of noise and confusion, I pray for the wisdom to listen closely to the Spirit’s guiding voice each day.

Day 2 John 16:5-15

Reflect: How would you describe the role of the Holy Spirit from this text? Consider these questions: Where is Jesus now? Where is the Holy Spirit? How do they, together, continue the work of salvation?

Apply: Can you think of a time when the Spirit guided you, convicted you, comforted you, or gave you courage to follow Christ? What has He taught you about sin, righteousness, and judgment (vv. 8-11)?

Pray: Lord, give me discernment regarding the judgment of this world. Mold me, soften me, and use the Spirit’s work to shape me into Your image.

Day 3 John 16:16-24

Reflect: What does the metaphor in v. 21 teach us about the nature of temporary suffering? What does it mean to pray “in Jesus’ name”? How does it change your confidence in praying?

Apply: If joy is a gift from God, how do we protect it when facing personal trials or intense seasons of grief? Why do you think Jesus connects our joy directly to answered prayer (vv. 23-24)?

Pray: Father God, help me to live with expectant faith, trusting that You will answer according to Your perfect timing and wisdom. Fill my heart with Your peace and let the joy You promised be made complete in me today.

Day 4 John 16:25-33

Reflect: What speaks loudest to you in this passage? How does knowing that the Father directly loves you because of your faith in Jesus impact your self-image and prayer life? What do vv. 29-32 teach us about the difference between overconfidence in our own strength and true reliance on God?

Apply: When has your heart been for Jesus, but your flesh not? What was the outcome? Where is the world right now bringing tribulation in your life? How does the truth in v. 33 speak to you about it?

Pray: Jesus, forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength. Search me, Lord, and build me in me a humble, steady faith that does not waive even when tested.

Day 5 Romans 8:1-11

Reflect: How does this text complement John 16? What does the word “condemnation” mean to you personally? How do vv. 5-8 speak to you? And what about vv. 9 and 10? What is God saying to you?

Apply: What kinds of condemning words does the enemy speak to you? When you ask God what pleases Him, what do you hear? Do you truly believe you stand righteous before God with Jesus?

Pray: Loving Father, I pray that Your Spirit inhabits my mind today so that I may yield my thoughts, actions and desires to You.  Walk with me, guide me, and help me live as someone truly free.
