The Book of John – Week 15: Dying to Live | July 13–17

This week, Jesus calls His disciples to let go of self-centered living and to follow Him fully. The cross is not only the path Jesus walks but also the pattern for those who belong to Him. This passage challenges us to decide whether we will cling to self-preservation and remain in darkness or surrender our lives to Christ and walk in the light that leads to true life. Jesus reveals that true life and glory come through surrender, sacrifice, and following Him into the light.

Put It into Practice: Begin each morning asking: “Jesus, what would it look like to follow You faithfully today?” Then respond quickly to whatever He brings to your attention. Ask God to reveal what might be keeping you from this deeper obedience.

Day 1 John 12:20–26

Reflect: Why do you think Jesus answers the Greeks’ request with teaching about death and fruitfulness rather than direct accessibility? What does this text reveal about influence and sacrifice?

Apply: What are you trying to preserve—comfort, control, image, security— that may actually be hindering spiritual fruitfulness? What evidence of surrendered discipleship do others see in you?

Pray: Heavenly Father, may I be willing to die to the things of myself and come to the place where I am able to shed my sinful nature so that I may be raised up as a fruitful branch that honors You.

Day 2 John 12:27-36

Reflect: Describe the power of the cross based on this text. Are there places in your life where you misunderstand this power? When have you experienced any personal dark-to-light transformations?

Apply: What would change if you adopted Jesus’ prayer (v. 27-28) as a model when you are going through a difficult trial or crisis? Do you tend to walk more in Christ’s light or drift in spiritual shadows?

Pray: Forgive me, Father, for the times I’ve let spiritual blindness or stubbornness creep in. Keep darkness from overtaking my mind or my steps. Polish my faith so that I don’t just see Your signs but fully trust Your heart.

Day 3 John 12:37-43

Reflect: What is spiritually dangerous about partial belief that never becomes open obedience? Why is it possible for people to see God at work and still harden their hearts?

Apply: Are there places where your faith remains hidden because you fear others’ opinions? How can you conquer this? Whose approval has too much influence over your decisions or spiritual boldness?

Pray: Lord, please keep my heart soft, responsive, and deeply aware of Your presence. Open the eyes of my heart so that I can truly see Your hand at work in my life and open my ears so that I can hear Your voice clearly.

Day 4 John 12:44-50

Reflect: Why does Jesus emphasize His full reliance on the Father for all He says and does? If Jesus didn’t come to judge, how will people be judged on the “last day” (v. 48), and what does that mean?

Apply: Are there truths from Jesus that you acknowledge mentally but have not fully embraced in practice? Explain what Jesus means when He says that God’s commands lead to eternal life (v. 50).

Pray: Holy God, give me a deep hunger for Your Word. Let it be the absolute authority in my life—shaping my values, directing my decisions, and anchoring my hope.

Day 5 Ephesians 5:6-13

Reflect: How does this text encourage you? What does Paul suggest happens when authentic Christian lives expose darkness? Why does darkness often feel easier to tolerate than to confront?

Apply: Where might God be calling you to bring gracious truth into a dark situation rather than remaining silent? Be quiet before the Lord and ask Him to reveal to you what in your life pleases Him.

Pray: Lord Jesus, remind me daily of my true identity. I was once in darkness, but now I am light in the Lord. Because of that beautiful transformation, help me to live intentionally as a child of light.
