Prayers of God’s People Week 4: Prayer of Dependence – Habakkuk May 12-16

The story of Habakkuk offers profound insights into trusting God even when life doesn’t make sense.  Habakkuk lived during great turmoil as the kingdoms of Israel and Judah faced destruction and  exile. Yet, his journey of faith and prayer provides a roadmap for us today. Whether it’s personal  struggles, economic difficulties, or global crises, we can trust in and depend on God and find joy in  His presence.

Put It into Practice: Memorize verses, such as Psalm 46:10 or Isaiah 43:2, to include in your  prayers as a reminder to depend on God’s promises and faithfulness during challenging times.

Day 1     Habakkuk 3:1-15

Reflect: How would you describe Habakkuk’s tone in prayer before God in verses 1-2? What  evidence do you see for this tone? What descriptors of God show His might and power as a warrior?

Apply: Why do you think the Exodus imagery was significant for Habakkuk in his time? What Bible stories regarding dependence on God speak more aptly to us today?

Pray:    Lord, we know Your deeds and stand in awe of Your power. Even in the midst of troubled  times, You always have a plan. We cry out for revival while trusting and praising You.

Day 2      Habakkuk 3:16-19

Reflect: Why do you think Habakkuk is trembling, even as he waits patiently? What sort of faith  declaration is Habakkuk making? What personal examples would you use in verse 17?

Apply:   Have you endured a time of great trouble? Looking back, in what ways did you depend on  God? Like Habakkuk, how have you learned to rejoice and trust God due to this season of your life?

Pray:     God, even in the most challenging times, I choose to rejoice in You, the God of my salvation.  You are my strength, my refuge and my hope. I trust in Your unfailing love.

Day 3      Psalm 46:1-11

Reflect: What does it mean for God to be a refuge? How does acknowledging God’s control over all  things help us depend on Him more fully? What is the relationship between fear and dependence?

Apply:   How can the practice of being still before God deepen our dependence on Him? How does  assurance of God’s presence and protection impact your daily life and decision-making?

Pray:     Lord, nothing stands against Your power. You are my fortress of safety and protection. You  are with me and I am secure. You are my “enough” no matter what.

Day 4      Isaiah 43:1-7

Reflect: What words in this text bring you comfort? What does this text say about God? About our  relationship with Him? How does God promise to be with His people in times of trouble?

Apply: What does the phrase, “prayer of dependence,” mean to you and how does it relate to  trusting God in difficult times? How does entirely depending on God bring Him glory (verse 7)?

Pray: Father, when I face the storms and flames of life, help me to recall Your character and  graciousness in my past to face today and the future with expectation rather than fear.

Day 5       James 1:2-4, 12

Reflect: According to James, what is the purpose of trials in the life of a believer? How do trials  contribute to spiritual growth and maturity? Are you more dependent on God in trials or on  something else?

Apply: Would you say you found joy in a trial? If so, why? What steps can you take to spiritually  prepare yourself for future trials? How would you turn these verses into a prayer?

Pray:    Holy Spirit, help me trust in Your love and wisdom even when I don’t understand the path  ahead. I ask for courage and strength, knowing You are with me every step of the way.
