Myth Week 1: Can I Trust this Book?-November 25-29

This week we will explore the historical and textual reliability of the Gospels. There are eyewitness accounts, historical and archeological findings to support what we read in the Bible. But what is most important in lending accuracy to the Bible is the history of redeemed and transformed lives.

Day 1       Luke 1:1-4

Reflect: What was the purpose of Luke giving an account of what transpired? Why are eyewitnesses so important in these accounts? Why are four Gospels in the Bible?

Apply:   What do you consider reliable sources for hearing the truth in general? What questions have you had about the reliability of the Bible? How have you overcome the issues?

Pray:     Lord, You brought together first-hand witnesses and encouraged them to write down all that they saw. Now, thousands of years later, we can still have first-hand knowledge of what actually happened. Thank You for providing for our faith in such a beautiful way.

Day 2      John 20:30-31

Reflect: What was the purpose of John’s Gospel? How is Jesus presented? What roles do miracles play in Jesus’ life? In John’s Gospel, what claims does Jesus make that are difficult to believe?

Apply:   In what areas of your life do you need stronger faith?

Pray:     Jesus, draw me closer to You, to consistently abide in Your presence.  Through your Spirit, conform me to the character and nature of your Son.

Day 3      2 Timothy 3:16-17

Reflect: How do you understand Scripture being inspired by God? What is God’s intent in giving us His written Word? How has Scripture taught, corrected, and equipped you?

Apply:   How have you wrestled with believing in certain God inspired writings in the Bible? In what ways can you incorporate Scripture into your daily routine for guidance?

Pray:    God, help me not just to read Your Word, but to understand and apply its truths to my daily situations. May Your Word shape me into who You want me to be, filling me with wisdom, love, and a heart ready to serve others.

Day 4       Psalm 119:103-105

Reflect: Why do you think the psalmist speaks so highly of the Word of God? When has His Word tasted sweet to you? Worked as a light in your life? Helped you take the right path?

Apply:   How would you describe what Scripture means to you? What kinds of descriptive words or analogies would you use? Would you be lost without it? Why or why not?

Pray:     Jesus, Light of the World, You illuminate the darkness and shine with pure radiance, pointing me towards the path of truth, freedom and righteousness.

Day 5      Hebrews 4:12

Reflect: How would you put what the writer is saying in your own words? Consider the power and living nature of God’s Word. In what ways is Scripture powerful? How is it alive?

Apply:   Does it matter if the Bible is true or not? What is the biggest challenge to the Bible’s reliability? How has Scripture penetrated your heart, transformed, and empowered you?

Pray:     Holy Spirit, as I open the Scriptures and hear the Word preached and taught, penetrate my heart and convict me of sin, show me the areas where I need to grow, and help me to become more like Jesus.

Put It Into Practice!

Each day this week, place Your trust in God and His Word by reading and meditating on Scripture, pray for ways to apply it to your daily life, be in community with other Christians, and serve others with God’s love and compassion.
