Week 3 A Wide Variety of Gifts June 9-13
Each believer has gifts to use, which are equally important to the kingdom. Some gifts are more readily visible, while others are more subtle or work behind the scenes, but all are of value and worthy of honor. The Apostle Paul argues that the weaker and less honored gifts should be treated with greater respect and honor. Understanding the role of gifts helps us gain a greater appreciation for them. We all need to discover the unique gift mix God has given us.
Put It into Practice: While discovering your gifts is important, so is finding where to use them. Consider these questions to help you find where you may serve: What do you see happening that breaks your heart? What are you passionate about? What topics could you speak about for hours?
Day 1 1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Reflect: Why does Paul begin by warning about being uninformed regarding spiritual gifts? Why is it important that the church learns that there are different kinds of gifts, various places to use them in service, and different levels of fruit from them, but the same Spirit provides them (verses 4-6)?
Apply: As you read the list of spiritual gifts here, which ones are most familiar? Which seem more mysterious? Which ones have you seen utilized and which ones have you not seen in the church?
Pray: God, teach us to honor and appreciate the diversity of gifts, knowing that each gift is necessary for the body of Christ to function as You intended. Guard us from pride and fear that would hinder the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Use our gifts to serve, encourage, and glorify You.
Day 2 Romans 12:6-11
Reflect: Paul gives practical guidance for how each gift should be used. Why are these instructions paired with each gift? What role does love and sincerity play in the use of spiritual gifts?
Apply: How does understanding that your gifts are a form of grace affect how you use them? How can recognizing the unity behind our diversity in gifts help prevent division or competition?
Pray: Holy Spirit, thank You for the gifts within each of us that reflects the beauty of diversity within Your body. In unity, with wisdom and humility, may we honor one another as we joyfully serve You.
Day 3 Acts 13:1-5
Reflect: How do prayer, fasting, and worship help cultivate sensitivity to the Holy Spirit when deciding to use or deploy gifts? How does the laying on of hands relate to recognizing and affirming gifts?
Apply: Have you ever felt the Spirit leading you to take a specific step in ministry? How did you respond? What gifts do you see in yourself that might be “set apart” for a greater purpose?
Pray: Lord, I seek to recognize and affirm the gifts You have entrusted to me. Reveal Your purpose for using my gifts to bring glory to You, to uplift others and to further Your kingdom.
Day 4 Acts 18:24-28
Reflect: How does spiritual passion relate to the effective use of spiritual gifts? Apollos was gifted, but had gaps in his understanding. What does this teach about the importance of growing in our gifts?
Apply: How can you recognize when someone needs deeper instruction in how to use their gifts? Are you more like Apollos (growing in gifts) or Priscilla and Aquila (helping others grow)? Why?
Pray: Father, help me use my gifts to serve You and others more effectively. Show me ways to encourage and support others to develop their gifts and fulfill their calling to build up the church.
Day 5 Exodus 31:1-11
Reflect: What do you learn about spiritual gifts from this Old Testament passage? How does this passage challenge the idea that only teaching, preaching, or leadership are “spiritual” gifts?
Apply: How does knowing that your work contributes to something sacred change your perspective on using your gifts? Is there a gift you’ve overlooked because it doesn’t seem “spiritual enough”?
Pray: God, help me to see the sacredness in my work, knowing that every contribution matters in Your kingdom. I offer my gifts with a willing heart, trusting that You have a purpose for them.
