The Book of John – Week 10: From Blindness to Belief | June 8-2
Jesus heals a man born blind, demonstrating that God’s work is about transformation, not blame. As the man gains physical sight, he also grows in spiritual understanding, eventually recognizing and worshiping Jesus as Lord. Meanwhile, the Pharisees reject the miracle, revealing their own spiritual blindness. The story highlights a powerful reversal: those who admit their need receive sight, while those who claim to see, remain blind. This passage calls us to humility, obedience, and openness to what Jesus wants to reveal, trusting Him to lead us from blindness into belief.
Put It into Practice: Pray for spiritual sight. Each morning, say: “Lord, show me what I’m not seeing.”
(Especially in your attitudes, assumptions, or relationships.) Act on what you already know. Like the blind man, take one step of obedience—even if you don’t have all the answers yet.
Day 1 John 9:1-7
Reflect: Why do people often look for a direct cause for suffering, and how does this mindset compare to Jesus’ perspective? Why might Jesus choose such an unexpected method for healing?
Apply: What is Jesus teaching you in verses 4-5? How do you know when God has a task or work for you? In what areas (physical, spiritual, emotional) do you need to walk in obedience to receive “sight”?
Pray: Lord Jesus, You declared, ‘I am the light of the world.’ I pray that You would open my eyes to see Your truth and remove the darkness of misunderstanding. Heal my spiritual blindness so that I may behold Your glory in my life and in Your Word.
Day 2 John 9:8-23
Reflect: Skepticism, legalism, fear. How do you see these in this story? In yourself? When the man calls Jesus a “prophet,” is that what the Pharisees wanted to hear? Why or why not?
Apply: When have you felt pressure to be silent about your faith, as the parents did? How can you stand firm in your faith when facing pressure from others to stay quiet? Pray for boldness today.
Pray: Lord, remove the fear that keeps me silent, similar to the parents in John 9:22 who were afraid to speak. Fill me with boldness so that I can declare that Jesus is the Christ, even when it is socially unpopular or risky.
Day 3 John 9:24-34
Reflect: How did the Pharisees expect this man to give glory to God? Did he? How do we give glory to God? They called Jesus a sinner. How do people today try to twist the truth to fit their own agenda?
Apply: How easy is it for you to declare yourself a disciple of Jesus? What does that mean to you? Define disciple. “I was blind, now I see.” How can this simple approach help you share your faith?
Pray: Heavenly Father, open the eyes of my heart to see Your glory in everyday circumstances and forgive me for the times I have relied on my own judgment rather than looking through the eyes of faith.
Day 4 John 9:35-41
Reflect: Describe how the man’s understanding of Jesus gradually changed, and why. Consider who found whom in this text. What does that say about Jesus? Blindness or sight, He says, it’s our choice.
Apply: What does it mean to admit our own spiritual blindness, and why is this necessary to receive sight? How can you apply the lesson of this healed man to your life? Who can you share it with?
Pray: Lord, I confess that without You, I am spiritually blind. Heal my spiritual blindness and help me to stop trusting in my own understanding, fully relying on You instead. Lord, I believe!
Day 5 Acts 26:12-18
Reflect: How does Paul’s story mirror the movement from blindness to sight seen in John 9? How does encountering Jesus reshape a person’s purpose and direction?
Apply: How has Jesus changed the direction or purpose of your life? How are you growing in clarity, courage, and worship? Use verse 18 as a prayer for those you know who still remain blind to Jesus.
Pray: Jesus, You are the Light of the World. I pray that You would open the eyes of those who are lost and far from You, turning them from darkness to light.
