The Book of John – Week 9: Out of the Darkness, Into the Light | June 1-5

Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world,” offering clarity, truth, and life to those who follow Him. While the Pharisees challenge His authority, Jesus reveals that their issue is not a lack of evidence but spiritual blindness. He warns that rejecting Him leads to dying in sin, yet points forward to the cross as the ultimate revelation of His identity. This passage highlights the dividing line of belief—some reject the light, while others step into it. Those who follow Jesus move from darkness into life and find hope through faith in Him.

Put It into Practice: Walk in the light daily. Spend 10 minutes each day in Scripture, asking: “What is God showing me that I need to follow? What is He highlighting for me?” Then, bring something into the light. Share a hidden struggle with a trusted believer—refuse to let darkness grow in secrecy.

Day 1 John 8:12-20

Reflect: What are the two promises Jesus makes in verse 12 to those who follow Him, and what do they mean practically? What does verse 19 tell us about the relationship between Jesus and God?

Apply: How have you experienced Jesus as the “light” in a dark time in your own life? Where in your life are you now trying to navigate without fully relying on Jesus’ light? How will you let His Light in?

Pray: Father, forgive me for times when I have stumbled in darkness. I ask for Your light to illuminate my path, relationships, and decisions, bringing clarity and peace.

Day 2 John 8:21-24

Reflect: What does it mean to “die in your sins,” and why is this such a dire warning from Jesus? How can someone seek Jesus and still not find him? What does this mean for our own seeking?

Apply: Where are you treating belief in Jesus as optional rather than essential?  How can you live more from above and not from below? What helps strengthen your confidence in who Jesus truly is?

Pray: Father God, forgive me when I act as though I am from below, and align my mind and actions with Your heavenly truth. I trust that through Your sacrifice, I am forgiven and anchored in Your salvation.

Day 3 John 8:25-30

Reflect: Why is it crucial to believe that Jesus is the “I AM” (the Divine Name)? (v. 28) How does the paradox of the cross (the Crucifixion) reveal Jesus’ identity and His obedience to the Father?

Apply: When have you silently asked Jesus, “Who are you?” Fill in the blank today: “I AM ___”

How does acknowledging Jesus as “I AM” change how you live your daily life and view your sin?

Pray: Lord, I look to the cross—where the Son of Man was lifted up—to recognize Your power and salvation. Help me to truly know that You do nothing on Your own, but only what the Father has taught You.

Day 4 John 8:31-47

Reflect: What does Jesus say is the difference between surface-level belief and true discipleship? How does truth lead to freedom, and what kind of freedom is Jesus describing? What blocks truth?

Apply: How does Jesus describe the devil, and why is it important to know that? How have you been set free by a truth from God? How has the enemy blocked you from receiving truth? What resulted?

Pray: Lord Jesus, I ask for the grace to abide deeply in Your truth so that I may be set free. Free me from the power of sin and from the lies of the enemy. If the Son sets me free, I am free indeed – a freedom I desire to walk in daily.

Day 5 John 8:48-59

Reflect: What is Jesus implying when He says He does not seek His own glory? What does Jesus mean in v. 51?  Why does Jesus’ claim in v. 58 provoke such a strong reaction?

Apply: How can you ensure you are honoring the Father, as Jesus did, rather than building your own glory? What has Jesus revealed this week that you need to follow through on? Walk in obedience.

Pray: Jesus, help me to treasure Your teachings, to abide in them, and not to fall into the pride and unbelief that blinded the religious leaders of Your day.
