The Book of John – Week 6: When Following Gets Hard | May 11–15
Jesus used the same phrase “I AM” in seven declarations about Himself. In all seven, He combines I AM with powerful metaphors that express His saving relationship with the world. All appear in the Book of John. The first declaration follows another miracle Jesus performed: the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus feeds the crowds, meeting physical hunger with miraculous provision using only five small loaves of bread and two fish. When Jesus declares, I AM the Bread of Life, He reveals the deeper truth that real life is found not in temporary satisfaction, but in abiding trust in Him.
Put It into Practice: Set aside intentional time each day this week to read Scripture and pray—not for quick answers, but for deeper dependence on Jesus. Allow His Word to feed your spirit and soul.
Day 1 John 6:1-13
Reflect: Why does Jesus test Philip before performing the miracle? What does Andrew’s small offering reveal about participation in God’s work? Why does John stress abundance, the leftovers?
Apply: Where do you feel under-resourced right now? What “five loaves and two fish” might God be asking you to offer? Are you following Jesus for who He is, or for what He provides? Explain each.
Pray: Lord Jesus, like the boy with the loaves and fish, I bring my small offerings to You. I surrender my limited time, talents, and treasures, trusting You to multiply them to meet the needs around me. Strengthen my faith to trust in Your abundance rather than my scarcity.
Day 2 John 6:14-24
Reflect: Why do you think Jesus slipped away by Himself? What do Jesus’ words, “It is I; don’t be afraid,” reveal about Himself? How do life’s storms expose how strong our faith truly is?
Apply: What situations lead you to alone time with God? What fears surface when you feel like Jesus is distant? When did a tough time make you realize that your faith was not as strong as you thought?
Pray: Lord Jesus, after feeding 5000, You withdrew to be alone to be with the Father. Help me seek You for who You are, not just for what You provide. Strengthen my faith to trust in Your provision and focus on the eternal, rather than fleeting bread.
Day 3 John 6:25-40
Reflect: Why does Jesus confront their motivation for seeking Him? What does it mean that believing is “the work” God requires? Why did Jesus correct their statement about Moses? What is false bread?
Apply: Describe in your own words what Jesus’ declaration, “I Am the Bread of Life,” means. Why is this metaphor significant? What does feeding on Jesus look like in your life? Are you full or hungry?
Pray: God, thank You for the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ, who satisfies my deepest hunger. I ask that You help me to live by Your Word and to trust Your sacrifice to satisfy our Father’s will in me.
Day 4 John 6:41-59
Reflect: Why does Jesus not soften His language when people struggle? What do verses 53-56 communicate about intimacy and dependence, and about curiosity or commitment to Christ?
Apply: How do you “feed on” Jesus? Are there teachings of Jesus you quietly struggle with or resist? Where are you tempted to edit Jesus to make Him more comfortable, and for what reasons?
Pray: Father, forgive me when I grumble or doubt. Help me to feed on You, the true bread, and I ask that as I abide in You, please abide in me so that I may live forever by Your power. Strengthen me to live in Your love today.
Day 5 John 6:60-71
Reflect: Why does Jesus allow people to walk away without chasing them? What does Peter’s response reveal about mature faith? Why is belief sometimes clearest when options narrow?
Apply: What are some reasons people typically take offense at Jesus today? When following Him becomes costly, what voices compete for your loyalty? What has kept you from turning away?
Pray: Lord Jesus, I know that I can stand on Your promises and trust You even when following You is difficult. Jesus, increase my faith, keep me close to You, for You are the Holy One of God.
