Samson Week 2: Emotions That Take Strong Men Down June 30- July 4
Emotional impulsiveness can derail even the strongest of men. Samson was physically powerful and divinely gifted, but he was emotion-driven rather than Spirit-led. Samson allowed his emotions, particularly anger and pride, to dictate his actions, leading to a cycle of revenge, violence, and, ultimately, loss. We must reject emotional impulsiveness and instead pursue humility, accountability, and self-awareness, and admit our need for God’s help and strength.
Put It into Practice: Identify your default emotions that often lead to sin. Pay attention when you feel them rising in you so that you can head them off at the pass with God’s help. Practice saying: “I was wrong.” “It was my decision.” “I need forgiveness.”
Day 1 Judges 14:10-20
Reflect: How does Samson’s riddle reflect his character? What does it reveal about his motives and mindset? How does he handle betrayal and humiliation? Describe his weaknesses and emotions.
Apply: What is the difference between outward strength and inner strength? How does this text illustrate that contrast? When have you been tempted to respond to hurt with revenge or anger?
Pray: Jesus, I ask for Your Holy Spirit to empower me to resist temptation, to choose righteousness over my own desires, to be aware of my weaknesses, and to turn to You for strength and wisdom.
Day 2 Judges 15:1-20
Reflect: How does Samson’s emotional impulsiveness drive his actions in this chapter? What emotions seem to control him? What resulted from his actions, and how does he justify them?
Apply: How has your unchecked anger affected you and those you love? When have you sought revenge and why? When others wrong us, what alternatives to vengeance does Scripture offer?
Pray: Father God, help me to trust in Your timing and wisdom, especially when overwhelmed or uncertain about Your plans. I pray that I always trust in Your perfect mercy and justice.
Day 3 James 1:19-27
Reflect: What advice from James do you need to hear? How does he describe pure and genuine religion in verse 27? What does this say about how we live out our faith beyond emotion or words?
Apply: When was the last time your disobedience to God’s Word got you into trouble? What help do you need from God in controlling your tongue and your temper?
Pray: Lord, help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Guide me to be mindful of my words and actions, help me to respond with patience and understanding, even when challenged.
Day 4 Galatians 5:13-17
Reflect: What does this text teach us about the difference between being led by the flesh or emotion and being led by God’s Spirit? How can one have the Spirit and yet still live according to the flesh?
Apply: How is your pride and anger keeping you from becoming the person God wants you to be? What practical steps can you take to choose Spirit over self? Who do you need to love better?
Pray: Heavenly Father, I recognize my ongoing battle between my flesh and Your Spirit, and I pray for Your help so that I may walk in the Spirit to seek and fulfill Your will.
Day 5 Galatians 6:1-10
Reflect: What kinds of seed did Samson sow in his life (v. 8)? What were the results? How might his life have been different if he had truly lived in community and accountability, as this text teaches?
Apply: How do you typically respond when you see someone struggling with sin? When have you experienced someone restoring you when you were struggling? How did that affect your walk?
Pray: Jesus, I come to You today in need of Your grace and strength. I recognize that I am prone to sin and struggle, and I pray for Your gentle guidance in navigating life’s challenges.
