Beyond Nice – Week 2: Putting Down Roots | September 28-October 2

Many people live trying to earn love from others and from God—yet Scripture teaches that God’s love is already given, complete, and secure. Being rooted and grounded in love implies that faith and life should flow from Divine Love. Without this foundation, our attempts to love others will always fall short or become conditional. When we truly believe in and receive God’s love, it transforms the way we see others. We stop loving out of emptiness and begin loving out of overflow. The call this week is not to try harder but to go deeper—to sit in, reflect on, and receive the vast, immeasurable love of God.

Put It into Practice: Replace the lie: When you catch yourself thinking you must earn God’s love, pause and replace that thought with truth: “I am already fully loved and accepted in Christ.” Make it a habit to ask God how He sees you and what He loves about you.

Day 1 Ephesians 3:14–19

Reflect: Which one of the phrases in the text most challenges you? Why? To what extent do you live with awareness that you have an inner being? Has v. 18 become a platitude for you? If so, why?

Apply: Where in your life are you settling for knowing about God’s love instead of experiencing it deeply? What new practices might help you become more aware of His love daily?

Pray: Lord, give me the spiritual power to grasp—along with all Your people—just how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love really is. Let me experience this love that surpasses mere head-knowledge, so that I may be filled to the very brim with all the fullness of God.

Day 2 Psalm 103:8–12

Reflect: Why is remembering His mercy essential to experiencing His love? What does the text reveal about God’s posture toward sinners and strugglers? Why is it hard to accept that God loves sinners?

Apply: What would it look like to live free from the weight of past sin? How does your view of God need to change considering His compassion and patience? How do you show you fear (revere) God?

Pray: God, I pause to breathe in the truth of who You are. I praise You for You are compassionate, gracious, and incredibly slow to anger. Your heart is overflowing with a love that is steady and kind, even when I falter.

Day 3 Romans 8:38–39

Reflect: What is significant about Paul listing both spiritual and physical realities that cannot separate us from God’s love? How does assurance of God’s love confront our fears of abandonment or failure?

Apply: What specific fear or insecurity most often makes you question God’s love for you? How can you go from a place of striving to be loved to living from being loved? What would change for you?

Pray: Father God, I hand over my anxieties and fears to You. I declare right now that whatever the present or the future holds, nothing can separate me from the security of Your presence.

Day 4 John 3:16-17

Reflect: Why is it often easier for us to try to pay God back than to simply receive His love with open hands? How does v. 17 challenge common assumptions about God’s intentions toward the world?

Apply: Pause and reflect on each of these parts of v. 16: “For God.” “So loved.” “The world.” “That He gave.” “His one and only Son.” Define each phrase. Ask Jesus questions about them. Treasure them.

Pray: Jesus, thank You for coming for me. I believe in You, and I place my trust in Your hands. Thank You for the breathtaking promise that because I believe, I will not perish.

Day 5 Ephesians 2:1-5

Reflect: What problem is Paul identifying, and whose problem is it? Can people have the problem and not know it? Is it a problem some people have, and others don’t? Can the problem be solved? How?

Apply: Does your sinful nature continue to rule your life? How might this be overcome? What does it mean to you to be saved by grace? Where might you be minimizing the depth of God’s love & grace?

Pray: God, when I feel overwhelmed or start falling into the trap of trying to earn Your approval, remind me of this great rescue. Help me walk today in the high-energy, vibrant reality of being fully alive in Jesus.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS WEEK 2

Habakkuk 3:19: “Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer [hinds’ feet], he enables me to tread on the heights [high places].”

Additional Questions:

  • Christ making His home in your heart (Eph. 3: 17) implies a permanent residency. In what areas of your “inner house” do you still treat Jesus like a temporary guest rather than the owner? What keeps people from fully receiving God’s love?
  • Why is it harder to receive God’s love than to do things for Him?
  • What “seed of doubt” does the enemy most often plant in your heart regarding God’s goodness?
